Line Of Duty's Adrian Dunbar teases return of BBC drama saying it could be just 'three or four episodes'

Actor Adrian Dunbar has teased that Line of Duty could take a new form if it does return. He suggested a seventh series could consist of “three or four episodes” or “two 90-minutes” specials and not the usual six episodes.

Speaking in an interview with The Times, the actor who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings in the BBC drama said the final decision on the storyline is “entirely down” to the show's creator Jed Mercurio. But added that he does have a reunion with his fellow Line of Duty co-stars on August 29.

The 64-year-old is set to sit down with Jed and fellow AC-12 stars Martin Compston (Our House) and Vicky McClure (Trigger Point) as they reunite for a curry on Monday. He suggested they “might hear something” about more episodes then.

Since the sixth series ended in May last year, Line of Duty fans have been eager to know what the future had in store for the police drama. The show's cast have shared pictures from a number of meet ups since the sixth series ended and each time it has sparked fresh excitement amongst fans that the drama could be making a return.

Series six finally tied up the long-running storyline of H's true identity but Adrian spoke of how there is still "a big appetite" for more episodes of the drama. Speaking of how the show could return, he said: "It could be three or four episodes; I don’t think there’s going to be six, for some reason.

"It might be two 90 minutes. But it’s all entirely down to Jed what the storyline is going to be. It’s a big ask for him," He continued: "It’s going to be really good. Maybe someone’s going to die. Someone’s going to be under threat. He doesn’t mind killing characters off. Maybe he’ll kill us all off. A terrible car crash when we’re rushing to the scene of a crime? We’ll have to leave it to him.”

When speaking to PA last month, Adrian had revealed he wasn't sure what "shape" a Line of Duty return would take and suggested a film could be a possibility. He did add how it "would be nice" to get back on set with his AC-12 pals.

Martin Compston shared a picture of the group meeting up for dinner in June, captioning that they were "talking tattoo designs". They previously agreed to getting 'AC12 million' tattoos if 12 million viewers tuned in to watch the show.

You can watch all six series of Line of Duty over on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
