Lil Nas X apologises over joke deemed ‘transphobic’ by fans: ‘It was not cool’

Lil Nas X has apologised to the transgender community after the singer was accused of making a transphobic remark online.

Earlier this week, the 23-year-old posted a photo of a woman who bore resemblance to him, alongside the caption: “THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS.”

However, fans took offense to the since-deleted tweet and called the Grammy winner out for seemingly mocking the gender transition process, claiming it was a transphobic joke.

Initially, the singer defended his comment and replied to one critic: “I’m literally just saying she looks like me y’all cannot be f***in serious.”

While another unimpressed social media user asked, “Why did you have to mention surgery?”, to which he wrote: “Because she has t****s? Are u dense?”

Following the backlash, the Old Town Road hitmaker had a change of heart and apologised to the trans community for his comment.

He tweeted: “Apologies to the trans community I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. much love to you guys. Sorry.”

A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Lil Nas X has overcome his own struggles with his sexuality revealing in an interview with BBC Breakfast that he originally intended on taking it “to the grave”.

Now a pop-sensation, the artist, who represents the open-minded and liberal nature of a generation, often uses his platform to call out homophobia.

Notebly in 2020, Lil Nas X faced criticism from Christian groups over a pair of custom-made devil-themed trainers he collaborated on with streetwear label MSCHF.

The shoes feature a pentagram pendant and a reference to Bible verse Luke 10:18 which reads “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”.

After their release, Christian groups accused the singer of “perverted” Satanic worship.

Following the outrage, Lil Nas X responded with an “apology” online, which cut after a few seconds to footage from the Montero (Call Me By Your Name) video of him dancing on the devil’s lap.

He later tweeted: “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the s**t y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay. So I hope u are mad, stay mad [and] feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”
