The Saudi Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that medical teams succeeded in saving the life of the head of the Iranian medical mission to the Hajj after he suffered a heart attack, reported the Saudi Press Agency.

It said Mohammad Reza Gholamreza Refatiani was transferred to the King Abdullah Medical City in the holy city of Makkah after he felt some chest pain.

Refatiani, 60, does not suffer from chronic diseases, said the Health Ministry

Doctors performed two catheterizations that saved his life.

Consultant cardiologist at King Abdullah Medical City, Dr. Mohammed Al-Ateen underlined the effectiveness of the emergency system in place to serve the Hajj pilgrims.

He said the teams were able to quickly transfer Refatiani to the hospital as soon as his symptoms emerged and their quick response helped save his life.

Dr. Al-Ateen stressed the health teams’ keenness on implementing the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, in providing the best medical care with the highest international standards for all citizens and visitors of the Kingdom.

For his part, Refatiani thanked the Saudi medical staff who supervised his treatment, praising the quality of medical services provided to pilgrims and the level of health care he received.

He has since been discharged from hospital.

The Ministry of Health, through hospitals and health centers in Makkah, Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina, Jamarat and Taif, has provided health services to more than 93,229 pilgrims, including 10 open-heart surgeries and 187 cardiac catheters.
