Life next to abandoned airfield where neighbours love not having shops or a pub

People have shared what it is like to live in a "quiet" hamlet next to a disused airfield. Residents living in Newton, near East Bridgford, say they love it and despite there being no local amenities they wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Many residents have lived in the area for years and can remember what it was like when the airfield was still active. Retired Shirley Blake, 67, has lived in Newton for 25 years, and said: "It's just quiet and it's on the edge of the countryside but it's only about half an hour into the city and we can go to Newark or Bingham.

"We have everything around us, the only thing is that it's started to develop quite a lot more. When I first moved here there was about 145 houses and now there are much more.

"When they closed the airfield we still had training taking place down there and then sometimes we had helicopters down there as well. Even before it has always been quiet but with the new builds we're dealing with a lot more traffic."

Speaking about Newton now, she added: "Generally it's really friendly here and we all look after each other. It's not commercial here, we have no pub and we have no shop, but the only thing we are lacking is some facility for the older kids, like teenagers, it would be nice for the youngsters to have something."

Hairdresser Karen Johnson said: "I've been here 23 years. I lived at Gunthorpe before but it was more affordable housing to come here and live in a village area as these are all ex-RAF houses."

When asked about the airfield, Karen replied: "I remember when it was used, and people went to it for discos." She continued: "When I moved here we knew that the development was going to happen. They built the houses for the development and there's a large park for the children and we have an area to walk.

"There are no amenities here but when we moved here we knew to expect that. You would need a car to live here, definitely."

When asked what her favourite thing was about Newton, she replied: "Obviously dog walking as we have two dogs."

DHL worker, Rob Sanders, 52, has lived with his partner in Newton for the past three years. He said: "It's just nice and peaceful and so quiet.

"There's no trouble and it's just very nice. We can hop to the local shop in the car as you need a car to live here.

"There are lots of great places for dog walking. They obviously love it." Rob said he and his partner weren't in the area when the airfield was still open and don't really know what it's used for now.

When asked his favourite thing about the area, he stated: "I think the closeness of all the people on the street, we all know each other really well and everyone is really nice." A 57-year-old woman who did not wish to be named said: "I have been here for about 26 years.

"We moved here for a better house." She explained her favourite thing was "the view from my house" as it looked out onto all the fields.

Speaking about Newton, she continued: "I like that it's not got shops, and there are good travel links nearby like the A46. I was one of the first ones in here.

"The airfield closed down and they started selling off the homes as all these are ex RAF houses."
