Lidl's £2.59 own-branded ground coffee beats out Starbucks

It's the morning go-to drink for a lot of us, but do you really need to spend a hefty price for a rather decent cup of coffee?

Getting your hands on the best cup of coffee can feel like a trivial task, with the likes of Starbucks and other premium-brands being quite pricey.

But, it looks like the answer to coffee-lovers dreams has finally been answered, as a blind taste-test has found one budget supermarkets own-branded ground coffee has wiped its competition.

Fans of the hot beverage will be happy to hear that consumer champion Which? tasted a number of different coffee brands and found that one supermarket is offering you the best version from your home- Lidl.

The popular budget supermarket has once again impressed with its cheaper own-branded product that beat out the likes of Starbucks and M&S.

Tasters were asked to rate the ground coffee's based on aroma, appearance, flavour and aftertaste, reports The Mirror.

Lidl came top with a 75% approval rating after two-thirds of tasters said it was “spot-on”.

Sainsbury’s Fairtrade Colombian Coffee was second with 74% while Marks & Spencer and Morrisons’ own-brand coffee both received 73%.

Taylors Colombia San Sebastian ground coffee – which sells for £4.50 per pack – got the lowest rating at 63%.

Two-thirds of testers said it was “too weak”.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: “Switching from premium and branded groceries to supermarket own-label versions can be a great way to save money, without having to compromise on quality or taste."

She added: “Coffee is an integral part of many people’s daily routine and single origin coffees are a step up from your everyday instant brew.

"But they can be expensive, so it’s worth choosing carefully to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth.

“For anyone looking to cut back on their spending, switching from premium and branded groceries to the supermarket own-label versions can be a great way to save money, without having to compromise on quality or taste.”
