Voters did not need a Westminster committee to tell them Boris Johnson is a liar and a charlatan. He was fired from one of his first jobs in journalism after fabricating a quote.
He was sacked from former Tory leader Michael Howard’s team for lying about an affair. He was one of the key figures in a Vote Leave campaign that systematically deceived British people.
It was obvious he was not someone to be trusted long before Partygate, which saw him socialising with colleagues at No10 while the public were banned from attending loved ones’ funerals.
He is an appalling individual. Following a year-long investigation, the Commons’ Privileges Committee concluded he had misled Parliament over lockdown parties in Downing Street.
In one of the most damning reports on a senior politician, MPs found he deliberately misled the committee while they were investigating him.
He was also found guilty of “impugning the committee” in his criticism of it and being complicit in a “campaign of abuse” against its members.
This was “all the more serious” because he was the most senior member of the government. The report also found he had “personal knowledge” of breaches of the Covid rules and guidance in No10.
No wonder Jonhson the coward quit before the committee recommended a 90-day sanction. Rishi Sunak must use this report to bury Johnson and ensure his Tory career is over forever.
He should never be allowed to stand as a Conservative again and must be booted out of the party he once led so disreputably.
US Republicans had the same opportunity to end Trump’s political career after the January 6 terror attack on Capitol Hill.
They bottled it and Trump is poised to stand in the next presidential election. Sunak must learn lessons from this major mistake. Another piece of unfinished business is ripping up Johnson’s resignation honours list.
This was another disgraceful episode that saw the craven allies and gullible fools given gongs for blind loyalty, such as the odious Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Instead of being pushed through, the list should be shredded and consigned to the dustbin of history. Johnson’s rise to the top job in British politics was one of the lowest moments in UK political history.
He turned the country into an international laughing stock and degraded politics like his demagogic cousin Trump. He must be banished from public life for good.
