Liam Scales breaks silence on Celtic vs Rangers penalty controversy

Liam Scales has broken his silence on the controversial penalty decision in the Premier Sports Cup final between Celtic and Rangers.

The centre-back, 26, was booked in extra-time as he hauled down Vaclav Cerny after failing to control the ball in a dangerous position.

Scales was booked for the foul with a free-kick awarded by John Beaton. There was no VAR intervention over the call but there has been outrage over the decision.

Philippe Clement is certain his side should have had a penalty with Cerny's foot appearing to be on the line while Scales still had hold of his shirt.

The Ibrox boss said: "I don't know if you saw the images, but my phone is overloaded with the penalty situation with Cerny, so I get hundreds of messages now about that. So that's also a really decisive moment for me."

On whether he'd discussed the matter with the match official, Clement added: "Yes, of course. He cannot see that moment, but he didn't get the communication from the VAR to come and watch the screen.

"That's for me a really weird situation, that at least there's no look about that kind of situation in this kind of game. About the situation that the referee can make a decision. "

IFAB rules state: "If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick."

However, Scales insists there were no appeals for a penalty at the time as he stated he believed he was outside the box - but hadn't yet watched the replays of the incident.

"I thought it was outside the box," he said. "I haven't watched it back, so I can't really tell you.

"At the time, I thought it was outside and there were no complaints at the time.

"We just got on with the game. I'm sure they looked at it upstairs."

Bobby Madden reckons Rangers were denied a stonewall penalty as he commented: "This is 100 per cent a penalty kick.

"It doesn't matter when the holding started, when it ended or what direction the players are moving.

"This is clear evidence of holding within the penalty area and I'm amazed this hadn't been identified by VAR. Referee team had been excellent until that point. Difficult live, but that's why VAR is there."
