Liam Brady's final Ireland verdict on RTE as he details his plans for the future

Liam Brady watched the Republic of Ireland beat Gibraltar 3-0 in his final game as an RTE pundit on Monday night, but believes the Boys in Green are still a long way off qualifying for a major tournament.

Goals from Mikey Johnston, Evan Ferguson and Adam Idah secured victory for Stephen Kenny's side after their 2-1 defeat to Greece last Friday in Athens.

However, Brady doesn't see Ireland qualifying for next summer's Euros as they now prepare to face France and the Netherlands in September.

He said: "I'm saying the players are not good enough to qualify us for a Euros or a World Cup. You have to remember that there's 24 teams going to play in the next Euros. That's probably 50 per cent of the teams that are in it and we're not in the mix.

"James McClean said there it would be nice to have the media on your side, but you'll only get the media on your side by winning matches.

"He (Kenny) has had two and a half years of where the media have backed him when results were really, really poor. We've had some terrible results - Luxembourg... Azerbaijan - but they stuck with him and to be fair I said it tonight he's given young players a chance.

"He works really, really hard, but at the end of the day it's results that are going to dictate his future and the narrative can only change about his future if he gets big results.

"Now we've got France and the Netherlands to come in September. If we lose both of those games, it probably looks like we're not qualifying and then his future is going to come up again.

"To change the narrative, he's got to have some big results."

Having the final word on RTE's coverage of the match, Brady said he is now looking forward to attending Ireland matches with his grandchildren.

He concluded: "I'd like to say a great thanks to RTE for giving me the chance to sit here for the last 25 years and do what I do. Getting paid for talking about football - what a dream job.

"My grandchildren are coming to the Aviva now to watch the matches so I'm going to be with them."
