One of the traditional activities during Lexington’s Fourth of July Festival is a parade down Main Street. It’s also tradition to have a number of political campaign units in the procession. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said she’s not aware of any serious discussion about limiting political entries. The mayor said it would be nice to have more floats and bands. But, there are challenges in attracting school bands in the summer.
“Some of them are getting ready for band camp for the summer, the bands do band camp and so the preparation for the parade and getting everybody there. They have to hire buses and things like that.”
This year’s parade is scheduled for July fourth at noon. The festival kicks off on Saturday, July first with the Red, White, and Blues music event at Moondance Amphitheater.
The official announcement of the lineup of events came last week. Lexington Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Adrienne Thakur gave details on the Bluegrass 10,000 race and fun run.
“That starts at 7:25 for the Ten-K. The Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m. and we’ll all be there ready to greet you, smiles on, I promise, at the corner of Main Street and North Limestone,” said Thakur.
Thakur said this will be Lexington’s 47th Bluegrass Ten Thousand. The schedule includes a patriotic concert on Monday, July third, along with the fireworks display downtown at ten p.m. on the Fourth.
