The city of Lexington is working with officials in five other central Kentucky counties to come up with a regional climate plan to reduce greenhouse gases. Angela Poe, with Lexington’s Environmental Services department, said the solar energy program Solarize Lexington will be one of the topics.
“The thought is to expand Solarize into those communities, which basically makes solar available to folks at a discounted rate. The next effort would be planting trees.”
Poe said another proposal is to increase the number of charging stations for public and privately-owned vehicles. Other ideas will come from government officials and residents of the six counties.
“The hope is that as we engage more and more folks in this process, we can better fit it to the communities that we're trying to reach.”
A grant from the Environmental Protection Agency is funding the work and Poe said the ideas generated from Thursday’s meeting and others will be incorporated into another grant proposal. The first meeting of the group, which will include city governments and is open to the public, is Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Lexington’s Senior Center on Life Lane.
