Early life

Even in his early years Lewis Capaldi had a huge love music.

He began learning the drums from the age of two and soon, at the age of 11, started singing in pubs shortly before he began putting pen to paper and writing his own music.

In an interview, Lewis previously said: "I started playing the guitar when I was nine, because my older brother, who is six years older than me, he was doing it.

"I started writing songs from that age too, and when I turned 11 I wanted to play gigs. My older brother, he was in a band, and he got me into pubs.

"Obviously I was 11 so I wasn't allowed to be in a pub, so I'd have to go and hide in the bathroom before I played, and I'd always leave immediately after. I did that, kicking around throughout Scotland from then until the age of 19 or 20."

How was Lewis Capaldi discovered?

Ryan Walter, his current manager, discovered the talented singer through an iPhone recording Capaldi had recorded in his bedroom before uploading it to SoundCloud.

Lewis released his first track, Bruises, on March 31, 2017 and it soon gained close to 28 million plays on Spotify worldwide making Capaldi the fastest ever unsigned artist to reach 25 million plays on the platform.

Towards the end of 2018, Lewis released his second EP ‘Breach’ with songs including Grace and Someone You Loved - two songs which helped him soar in popularity. The latter of which jumped in the charts to the top spot for seven solid weeks and being named the best selling song of the year.

The singer has won multiple awards with him having recently taken to Instagram to thanks people for supporting him and his new song. This now takes his total to four number one songs.

Capaldi has also picked up awards including BBC’s Sound of 2018, The Great Scot Awards 2018 Breakthrough Award and Forth Awards 2018 Rising Star Award and Brit Award for Song of the Year 2020 - to name a few.

He has appeared on stage, not only as a solo artist, but with the likes of Niall Horan, Sam Smith, Rag’n’Bone Man and more recently, The 1975.

Hiatus and headlining TRNSMT

Taking a break from social media in January 2021, the singer announced that he would be stepping back for a while to focus on his second album.

In a post he explained: “Honestly been the most incredible few years and it means the world to have the support of all of you. Going to f*** off for a wee bit now to crack on and finish the second album.

“Won’t be using any social media, so you’ll all have to make do without me talking s**** and constantly trying to take your money by flogging you something.

"Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year and I’ll see you big lovely b******* later in the year with some new music that I imagine will be universally panned by critics and will fail to be as commercially successful as my last outing."

At TRNSMT last year however, the headline artist wasn't afraid to poke fun at himself, telling fans his lack of new music was due to his 'his own laziness'. He told the crowd: “I’ve been sitting on my *** for three years. This is ******* incredible, thank you so ******* much for coming out to see me.”

He added: “You never know, if you come back, if folk are going to be interested or if you’ve been forgotten, so thank you very much. I have to apologise in advance because we were booked to play these gigs in like 2020 and then I had to reschedule and cancel because my album wasn’t ready.

“Now it’s 2022 and my album is still not ******* ready. I was supposed to have loads of new material for you but I am a lazy ****. I spent lockdown…masturbating. For the children in the audience who don’t know what masturbation is it’s like eating loads of sweeties and you’re like…ooft.

“My mum’s here, by the way."

Second album and 2023 tour

After his break, the singer came back unsurprisingly strong with his second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent. Although not release yet, songs such as Pointless and Forget Me are hits, with him singing some unreleased songs on his current tour.

Lewis recently performed in Glasgow and people love it so much they are still begging the singer to come back - and soon.

Romance

Many will know by now that Capaldi was in a relationship with Scottish Love Island winner Paige Turley when the two studied together at North Lanarkshire College.

In a radio interview in New Zealand, he joked he would like a cut of her £50,000 prize fund if she wins, joked: “The prize is like, £50,000.

“And I’ll be like, ‘Well, they asked you to go on it, I’m not saying I’m the reason but, also, sling me a couple of grand.’”

Capaldi added: “I’ve known her for years, we were 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started going out and 20 when we finished going out. It was fairly amicable, the split. She never told me she was going on the show.

“That would have been a nice heads up! But I mean fair play, good luck to her.”

When asked about Paige during an interview with The Independent, Capaldi said: “Everyone thinks ‘Someone You Loved’ is about Paige, it’s actually ‘Bruises’, and a bunch of other songs on the album that are about [Paige], but ‘Someone You Loved’ is about my grandma.

He continued: “This sounds very crass, but when you go out with a singer they can write songs about you and make money from that. So she’s got every right to talk about it, too.”

Swigging from a bottle of Buckfast, he joked: "Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend, who you can now see every night on Love Island."

"It's actually about my grandmother who has sadly passed away a few years ago. I hope to god that ITV don't contact her to be on a reality TV dating show."

Famous family

Lewis isn't the only famous face in his family with Peter Capaldi also part of his family tree, best known for Malcom Tucker in The Thick of It or the main man and Time Lord in Doctor Who.

Lewis told the Record: “My dad and my aunties told me we were related to Peter a while ago, I think he’s my dad’s second cousin.

“Whenever he came on the TV they’d always say ‘You’re related to Malcolm Tucker’ or ‘you’re related to Doctor Who.’

“None of us had met him though so when my agent mentioned he’d been in touch asking about coming to my show in London I said ‘yes, of course!’

“He came backstage afterwards to say hello and we had a great chat. We talked a bit about the family connection and he said he really liked the music, so that was really nice of him. He’s a really cool guy.

“It’s a big inspiration to have someone so successful in the family.”

Peter also starred in the music video for Lewis' number one song, Someone You Loved. Speaking to the Big Issue, he said: "We were at the record label and I was explaining what I wanted to do to raise awareness with this video. Very flippantly I was like, 'We could ask Peter Capaldi'."

He said: "My manager had his email from when he came down to the show last year, he emailed and literally the next day, my manager gets a phone call from Peter saying, 'Mate, I’d love to do this, send me over the script, I’d be honoured to be involved'."
