Levi Davis' mum claims rugby star 'depressed' and suffered racism before disappearance

The mum of rugby star Levi Davis says he was depressed and faced "deep issues" before he went missing almost two weeks ago.

Julie Davis claims her son was thinking about leaving rugby after suffering a ligament injury, adding he had suffered financial problems.

She also said Levi complained about enduring racism during his career as a rugby player.

The athlete, also known for his appearances on Celebrity X Factor and Celebs Go Dating, was last heard from after he travelled to Ibiza with a friend.

However, it has been claimed that he left on a boat to Barcelona by himself on October 29.

CCTV footage obtained by The Mirror shows the 24-year-old exiting the Old Irish Pub on the popular Spanish street Rambla dels Caputxins on that same day, at 10.05pm.

In the video, Levi can be seen carrying a small black rucksack, while wearing a white short-sleeved t-shirt, black trousers, and black and white trainers.

Friends and family launched a social media appeal for him to return, as they said he struggled with his mental health and coming out as bisexual.

His worried mum told Mail Online : "There have been a lot of issues going on for Levi recently which he shared with me. I think it was a build up of these things which eventually just blew his mind.

"Rugby has not been the best at looking after Levi and he's suffered a lot of racial prejudice. He didn't have a club and was also recently having money worries.

"At the same time there was some very deep emotional stuff around relationships that I can't really go into."

She added: "It seems as if everything just got too much for him and it's led to Levi going missing. He's had mental issues in the past but it seems as if this time he's not been able to handle them."

Former England rugby player Tom Varndell urged anyone who has seen Mr Davis in the past two weeks to get in touch as he tweeted: "If anyone has seen or heard from Levi Davis in the last two weeks could you please drop me a message asap. Many thanks."

Levi's sister Candeece Balfour, 23, spoke emotionally about his disappearance and said that she "just wants him to come home".

She told The Mirror: "I just want to tell him that I love him. I want to remind him and if anything, he knows that my mum of all people is the person he can go to.

"I just want him to come home and any support he needs, we can be there."

She added: "I only found out yesterday morning. I was worried. Definitely. I think it's just more upsetting because of how well he's done in life.

"My friend actually sent me a post saying, ‘isn't this your brother?’ I thought it was a scam. At first I didn't think it was real.

"She basically has a friend who's in Milton Keynes, who also does rugby and happens to know him. I messaged him, he sent me the poster and then obviously I saw the link to Bath club and all this Twitter stuff going on."

The family is awaiting updates from the Spanish police as the search to find the talented player continues.
