Levi Colwill has clear Chelsea pathway under Graham Potter with England call-up touted

It's been quite the season so far for Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill.

Colwill, 19, is enjoying a breakthrough campaign with Brighton and Hove Albion at present, impressing once more against Liverpool just days ago. His performances have even been said to have caught the eye of watching England manager Gareth Southgate.

Touted for his first Three Lions call-up, Graham Potter was in fact the manager who brought Colwill to Brighton, before his move to Chelsea soon followed back in September of last year. Expected to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge this summer, his development could benefit the Blues in the long run.

It's been a difficult period for Chelsea to manoeuvre around in terms of defenders, with Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso all departing, reinforcements were required, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibally and now Benoit Badiashile have all been brought in.

But Potter has clearly adapted to the idea of Colwill returning a better player, and with Thiago Silva likely to be the next defender through the exit door this summer, the pathway could not be clearer for Colwill next season.

Boasting an impressive 89.4% pass completion for the season so far per 90, his ability to break the lines and his tall frame only aid his game and certainly the Seagulls' impressive form too. He is also in the 97th percentile for passes attempted accorded to fbref.com per 90, only backing up his potential to reach even higher levels.

Aerially too Colwill stands out winning 2.92 of his battles per 90 and at 6ft 2in it only further reinforces his talents in the air as well as with the ball at his feet. Given Potter knows how well he is performing on the south coast, it seems he is keen on letting the defender continue to develop.

Expected to be challenged next season by the side's existing options, Chelsea have now shored up their options should Koulibaly exit and the club opt to cash in on him, with Colwill's path to success now clearer than ever. If Potter can give the 19-year-old the chances he deserves, he can be a superb asset for the Blues for many moons to come.
