A blood-stained bootlace left at a murder scene could prove whether Levi Bellfield killed a mum and daughter, it has been reported.
Bellfield, who is currently serving a life sentence for killing schoolgirl Milly Dowler and two others, is said to have admitted to the murders of Lin and Megan Russell in Kent in 1996, according to a lawyer.
At the time, Michael Stone was found guilty of the murders, as well as the attempted murder of Josie Russell, but has continually protested his innocence.
He is currently serving three life sentences, but his convictions have been thrown into doubt due to Bellfield's alleged confession.
Now a bootlace found at the scene of the murders is said to be undergoing forensic analysis after going missing for 14 years while in police storage.
Stone’s lawyer Paul Bacon said Bellfield has provided a four-page written confession which describes the gruesome crimes in graphic detail.
“The statement Bellfield has made, I believe is the truth,” said Mr Bacon.
“It now needs the police to interview Bellfield under caution and we can then establish Michael Stone’s innocence at last.
“My intention is to deliver the (Bellfield) statement to the CCRC (Criminal Cases Review Commission) and Cressida Dick for the Met to investigate."
If the CCRC deems the confession to be credible, it could send the case back to the Court of Appeal.
In the alleged confession, Bellfield described how blood was “everywhere” after he used a hammer to attack Lin, Megan and Josie.
According to the lawyer, he added: “Had she (Lin) screamed I would have attacked her and left not harming the children.
“The situation just got out of control and the more she complied it just gave me more confidence. I walked all three of them off the track. I forced Lin to sit down.”
The statement allegedly goes into detail about how he killed the pair and left Josie for dead, before he washed the blood off at a M25 service station in Surrey and then went to work as a nightclub bouncer.
It also allegedly references a "very long black bootlace", which Bellfield claims he had in his car.
If the confession is true, Bellfield is responsible for at least five murders, making him one of Britain’s worst serial killers.
The 53-year-old, who is now known as Yusuf Rahim after converting to Islam, is already serving life for the deaths of Millie, 13, Amelie Delagrange, 22, and 19-year-old Marsha McDonnell.
On top of that, he was also convicted of the attempted murder of 18-year-old Kate Sheedy.
