Letterboxd might be up for sale, because we can't have nice things

Letterboxd may or may not be up for sale soon, and we're not quite sure what this means for the future of everyone's favorite movie app.

Per Semafor, Canadian holding company Tiny, which owns Letterboxd, is looking to "sell its stake in a company that plays a powerful and growing role in the global film business."

Tiny has reportedly spoken to everyone from CNBC to Ankler Media, the latter of which is best known for its entertainment news Substack and newsletter. The holding company apparently approached Ankler in 2025 but couldn't agree on sales terms and instead "pursued a series of events, newsletters, and a sales partnership."

Letterboxd was initially founded in 2011 as an online cataloging service for films, being pitched at the time as a kind of "Goodreads for movies." Since then, the company has grown to be part catalog and part entertainment journalism, becoming widely known for its Four Favorites interviews with celebrities on red carpets for various movie premieres. The app also features curated lists from various filmmakers, including one from Martin Scorsese that provides a "companion film" for each of his movies.

The fact that Letterboxd isn't owned by a giant corporate entity or movie studio is sort of what makes the app so unique, and is how it's been able to grow en masse without becoming commercialized. Fingers crossed that it stays independent, or, at the very least, finds a buyer that has Letterboxd's best interests in mind.
