Sir Bernard Ingham’s obituary (27 February) brought back memories of when I was a neighbour of his in Purley, near Croydon. He was known locally as “battling Bernard”, apparently as much for his disputes with neighbours as in the world of politics. One had to secretly admire his determination as, once he had adopted a certain position, nothing would make him budge.
