Prunella Scales was appearing with her husband, Timothy West, at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds (the Leeds Playhouse since its redevelopment in 2018) one winter during the mid-1990s, when the city was engulfed, late evening, by a surprise, massive snowstorm. Public transport was disrupted and traffic almost completely stopped.

The Playhouse, where I was working at the time, put out on local media that the theatre would remain open as a refuge to anyone stranded in the city. Grateful members of the public, as well as that evening’s audience, were surprised and delighted to find themselves served with tea and biscuits all through the night by Pru and Tim.
