Dame Bridget Ogilvie had a wicked sense of humour. When the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust were working together to get the new European Bioinformatics Institute to locate to Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, we produced a brochure for those in charge of making the decision. We had agreed the text and were looking at photographs for it.

One was of John Sulston and Michael Ashburner, the scientists in charge, looking over a stone wall at a field representing the proposed site. Each had a bushy beard and an old tweed jacket. “They’re waiting for Godot,” said Bridget, quick as a flash.
