Former Newcastle United striker Les Ferdinand has admitted he is a 'big fan' of current number nine Callum Wilson. The 55-year-old - currently director of football at Queens Park Rangers - donned the famous jersey for one season in 1995-96.
An impressive 25 goals that year means Ferdinand is well-placed to comment on how to score in a black-and-white shirt. Since his arrival in 2020, Wilson has cemented himself as the Magpies’ main attacking threat.
The former Bournemouth man has finished as top goalscorer in both of his seasons on Tyneside. However, any success has been bittersweet as injury troubles have plagued Wilson’s Newcastle career.

Astonishingly, Wilson has missed 41 per cent of United’s top-flight games during his two-year stint. Ferdinand hailed the striker’s impact ahead of the clash against Tottenham Hotspur but remains wary of his injury record.
“I am a big fan,” he told Sky Sports. “If he can stay away from injuries… that’s been his big problem. If he stayed on the pitch he’d score more goals but the injuries have hindered him.
“He’s come in, and I often said when I went to Newcastle I could go in and score goals - I feel he’s the same. He knows he’s capable, just give him the opportunities. He just needs to stay away from injuries.”
