Leroy Sane has already revealed admiration for Mikel Arteta’s work at Arsenal amid transfer links

Leroy Sane has hailed Mikel Arteta for his role in taking him “to the next level” as a winger.

The pair worked together at Manchester City when Arteta was assistant to Pep Guardiola, before Sane made the move to Bayern Munich and Arteta became a manager in his own right at Arsenal.

Fellow Bayern winger Serge Gnabry was linked with a move back to the Gunners earlier in the transfer window, but that has been put to bed now he has signed a new contract with the Bundesliga champions.

It’s Sane who is now rumoured to be a potential Arsenal target, though when he joined Bayern in 2020 he signed a five-year contract so there is not the same urgency over his future as there was with Gnabry.

However, Arsenal fans will be encouraged by what Sane has said in the past about working with Arteta, and his comments about the job the Spaniard is doing at the Emirates.

“I can just say positive things about Mikel Arteta,” Sane told The Independent in 2020.

“Since we started working together, he helped me a lot on the pitch. He tried to improve my football, he told me what I did good and what I did wrong, and he tried to work on it.

“Next to Pep, they both really helped me and improved me, to bring me to the next level.

“Even now, at Arsenal, for me you can see he’s doing a great job. You can see he has a concept, a way that he wants to play, a way that he wants his team to play, and obviously it will take some time until everybody really understands it.

“I think he will do a great job as a [head] coach too.”
