Leonardo DiCaprio invested in Beyond Meat in 2017 before its IPO; 2 years later, the plant-based company briefly soared to a $10 billion valuation

Leonardo DiCaprio's early investment in Beyond Meat offers a fascinating look at how celebrity influence, climate-conscious investing and a rapidly changing food industry converged before plant-based meat became a major consumer trend. In October 2017, Beyond Meat announced that the Academy Award-winning actor had joined the company as an investor and advocate. The announcement came nearly two years before Beyond Meat entered the public markets, when the company was still trying to persuade mainstream consumers that plant-based protein could compete directly with conventional meat. DiCaprio's involvement was significant not simply because of his celebrity status, but because his environmental advocacy closely aligned with the company's stated ambitions around human health, climate, natural resources and animal welfare.

The timing of DiCaprio's investment is particularly striking when viewed against Beyond Meat's extraordinary transformation over the following two years. In 2017, the company was still a private business building distribution and consumer awareness around products such as the Beyond Burger. That November, Beyond Meat announced that the burger was expanding into nearly 200 Jewel-Osco supermarkets across Illinois, describing the move as an important step into a major meat-consuming market. The strategy was designed to make plant-based meat accessible to consumers who did not necessarily identify as vegetarian or vegan. Instead of restricting alternative protein products to specialty health-food stores, Beyond Meat increasingly positioned its products alongside traditional meat, helping turn plant-based food into a mainstream grocery category.

Beyond Meat Launch

By 2019, that strategy had helped create enormous investor enthusiasm. Beyond Meat launched its initial public offering in May 2019, selling 11,068,750 shares at $25 each and raising approximately $252.5 million in net proceeds after underwriting discounts and estimated expenses. The company's shares began trading on Nasdaq on May 2, 2019, marking an important milestone for the plant-based food industry. The IPO valued the company at roughly $1.46 billion at its offering price, but public-market enthusiasm quickly pushed the stock far beyond that level. Beyond Meat's own financial disclosures show that its IPO proceeds were intended to support manufacturing expansion, research and development, sales and marketing, and working capital as the company sought to build a much larger global business.

The market's reaction was extraordinary. Shares that had been offered at $25 surged on their first trading day, and the enthusiasm continued through the summer. By July 2019, Beyond Meat's stock had reached levels that put the company's market capitalization well above $10 billion, eventually peaking at about $14 billion based on its record closing price. In other words, the $10 billion milestone in the headline captures only part of the remarkable rally: the company's valuation briefly climbed substantially higher. This extraordinary performance reflected investors' belief that plant-based meat could become a huge consumer category and that Beyond Meat had established an early lead. The company had moved from a relatively small private food startup to one of the most closely watched public food companies in America in a remarkably short period.
