Leo Varadkar will return to the role of Taoiseach on December 17 after almost two and a half years as Tanaiste.
He was initially set to take on the role on December 15, but this would have prevented Micheal Martin from attending the final EU leaders meeting of the year in Brussels. It was agreed to suspend Varadkar's appointment for an additional two days as a result.
Michael Martin will take over the role of Tanaiste on the same day under the alternating system of leadership currently in effect for government. Varadkar had served as Taoiseach for over three years until Martin was appointed to the role in July 2020.

The Dail is required to sit on December 17 to officially appoint Varadkar as Taoiseach, although it falls on a Saturday. A Cabinet reshuffle is also predicted to occur alongside the changeover.
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe is set to move over to the Department of Public Expenditure. However, the current Taoiseach has confirmed that Darragh O’ Brien will continue to serve as Minister for Housing despite the rotation.
