Leo Varadkar’s Pancake Tuesday offering crucified as internet remembers ‘crime against food’

It’s Pancake Tuesday and the perfect opportunity to tuck into a tasty tower of pancakes.

While opinions vary on how to cook them, or what toppings to go for - almost everyone is in agreement about Leo Varadkar’s offering.

On Pancake Tuesday five years ago, the then-Taoiseach took to social media to share a picture of a rather pitiful looking pancake as he spoke of his "last treat before the Lenten fast" and how he was "looking forward to an uber healthy 40 days".

However the post quickly prompted a culinary storm on social media as hundreds of people took to the comments to share their thoughts on the pancake, which appeared to be so thin that it was literally transparent.

Five years on - the internet is remembering the “crime against food” which has gone viral for a second time.

Talking to Reddit Ireland today, one user shared the tweet, originally posted on February 13, 2018, writing: “On this Pancake Tuesday let us not forget this monstrosity”.

It has once again sparked hundreds of comments.

“How dare you remind me of this crime against food!?!” one person asked.

Another wrote: “why is he eating grease proof paper???”

A third commented: “The ghost of a pancake”

Someone else joked: “I printed this tweet out on a piece of paper thicker than that pancake.”

However others disagreed, with one person saying: “I don't understand the complaint about the pancake. Thin ones taste the best, no? I hate the spongey ones. This one is a little bit undercooked, but otherwise looks good.”

Another added: “I love me a thin crepe pancake. No hate here!!”

A third said: “Not a bad pancake, more of a crepe which is more common here like.”

It’s not the first time the Fine Gael leader’s social media posts about food have caused controversy.

Last October, the 44-year-old admitted he was “in trouble” with his partner Matt after he posted a photograph of the inside of their kitchen fridge.

The Tanaiste took to Instagram to praise his partner Matt for doing meal prep for the week.

He posted a picture of the couple’s kitchen fridge full of prepared food in lunch boxes, writing: "Matt has the meal prep done for the week. Fair play."

But people were confused by what kind of food was inside the lunch boxes, which also appeared to be left open without a lid.

"I genuinely cannot identify a single thing in that inexplicably lidless Tupperware," one person tweeted.

A second said: "The lack of lids on the food is what bothers me most. After two days it’ll be totally desiccated and even more unappetising than it looks in the photo."

A third follower asked: "Why is Twitter so intent on making me look inside Leo Varadkar's fridge?"

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland even got involved, warning that pre-cooked meals should be kept covered when stored in the fridge.

However, Varadkar later took to the social media platform again to apologise to his partner and share another picture showing a fridge full of preprepared meals in containers with lids.

“I am in trouble with Matt for not doing justice to his meal prep efforts with my photo.

“For everyone asking, yes we do use lids and have vegetables. Sorry Matt!,” he wrote.
