Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey's long-standing friendship revealed

Mariah Carey performs during a concert in Times Square on New Year's Eve in New York

In the realm of music, friendships can blossom and endure throughout the years, even before the individuals involved attain iconic status. This holds true for the camaraderie shared between Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey, two esteemed musicians whose bond traces back to their humble beginnings.

At the recent Recording Academy Honors in Los Angeles, presented by the Black Music Collective, both Kravitz and Carey were honored with prestigious awards. Seizing the opportunity, Kravitz took a moment during the red carpet interviews to shed light on the origins of their friendship. Recalling their initial encounter, he mentioned, 'We met on the east side in New York, and we were around the same group of friends.' The 2009 film Precious, directed by Lee Daniels, brought them together professionally, but their bond extended beyond the silver screen. 'She was working on her demos. I was working on mine. She worked at a sports bar I used to hang out at,' Kravitz reminisced. This mutual pursuit of their musical aspirations intertwined their paths, forging a bond that grew stronger over time. 'So, it's extra special to be sharing this night with Mariah,' he added, an undeniable sense of gratitude apparent in his words.

Further delving into their early friendship, Kravitz revealed that their hangouts would often take place at Carey's apartment, where furry companions would make their presence known. 'We used to go over to their house and hang out. She had a bunch of cats,' he disclosed during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Although the details surrounding these feline friends were left slightly ambiguous, the memory of spending quality time together through intimate music sessions lingered fondly in Kravitz's mind. 'I remember her playing her cassettes and me playing mine, and here we are tonight on the same night, which is cool,' he expressed.

The Recording Academy Honors bestowed upon both Kravitz and Carey the highly respected Recording Academy Global Impact Award and CEO Merit Award, respectively, a recognition that acknowledges their influential contributions to the music industry. Held at the illustrious Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, the ceremony served as a testament to the profound impact these artists have had on the world.

Coincidentally, Kravitz also graces the cover of this week's issue of PEOPLE magazine, adding to the excitement surrounding the event. Reflecting on his experience, he revealed, 'It's surreal to be on the cover of PEOPLE and to be at the checkout stand.' The cover story dives into Kravitz's journey as a rock star, starting with his early days as an aspiring musician shopping his music to record labels in the 1980s. Sharing his struggles with racial stereotypes and expectations, he recalled being told that his music wasn't 'Black enough' or 'white enough.' However, Kravitz remained steadfast in his vision, refusing to conform to preconceived notions. 'I was going to make the music that I made,' he asserted, showcasing unwavering determination and authenticity in his creative pursuits.

As Kravitz continues to evolve artistically, his latest album, Blue Electric Light, slated for release on March 22, stands as a testament to his growth and unwavering passion. Reflecting on his present state, he expressed a sense of awe, remarking, 'It's sort of amazing to me that I could be where I am now and feel fresh and hungry.' Authenticity, staying true to his unique sound, and embracing the calling laid upon him by a higher power are the principles that guide Kravitz on his musical journey. 'This is who God created me to be,' he emphasized. 'I'm just trying to walk in that destiny.'

The enduring friendship between Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey serves as a reminder of the power of connection, shared dreams, and mutual support in the entertainment industry. As they continue to thrive individually in their respective careers, their bond remains a testament to the enduring power of friendship throughout the years.
