While we’re here daydreaming and using TikTok filters to determine which celebrities we’d invite to a hypothetical dinner party, Lena Dunham has assembled an iconic group of celebs to celebrate her 40th birthday.
The Girls creator and memoirist held an intimate dinner at New York City restaurant Via Carota on Tuesday evening and invited a bunch of longtime pals and collaborators, including the one and only Taylor Swift.
Lena’s Girls co-star Andrew Rannells posted a series of Instagram Stories from the event, sitting next to both the birthday girl and the pop superstar as they ate cake and drank cocktails. Also in the snap was Emily Ratajkowski, who starred in Lena’s Netflix series Too Much, and her boyfriend, French film director Romain Gavras, who interestingly used to date Rita Ora and Dua Lipa.
“Happy birthday, @lenadunham! I continue to be in awe of your kindness and talent. ” Andrew captioned a selfie with Lena wearing a birthday tiara.
“And thank you for taking this picture so I can seem cool for the kids,” he wrote alongside the group photo.
Paparazzi photos from the event also show that Taylor arrived with her longtime friend Ashley Avignone, and Lena left the restaurant with not only a birthday tiara but a pink lava lamp.

Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham’s friendship
Taylor and Lena have been friends for over a decade, and were first photographed together at the 2013 Grammys. Lena appeared in the music video for “Bad Blood” in 2015, and Taylor said her song “You Are In Love” was inspired by Lena’s relationship with her then-partner (and Taylor’s longtime collaborator) Jack Antonoff.
The “Opalite” hitmaker has also credited Lena for helping her realise she was a feminist, telling The Guardian in 2014 that she had recently learned feminism didn’t mean “picketing against the opposite sex”.
“Becoming friends with Lena — without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for — has made me realise that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so,” she told the publication.

Lena also gave Taylor a shoutout in her recently released memoir Famesick, thanking her for “miraculously” picking up “every desperate call at every desperate hour”.
“TayTay‚ you sing the songs I wrote this book to, the stories that pulled these stories out of me, the music that makes the whole world feel seen,” she wrote.
Lena and Taylor’s friendship aside, fans took notice that the singer wore a white Retrofête minidress to the dinner — a colour that’s definitely not in the Life Of A Showgirl colour palette.
Her recent outings and interviews have seen her wear either white or black dresses, so perhaps a new era is on the way? I bet Lena Dunham knows what’s coming.
