Lena Dunham Doubles Down On Allegations About Adam Driver’s Behaviour On Girls Set

American actor and author Lena Dunham was probed about allegations she made about her Girls co-star Adam Driver while appearing on a morning talk show.

Speaking to The Guardian earlier this week, days before the release of her memoir Famesick, Dunham reflected on her time on the beloved HBO series, and opened up about Driver’s alleged on-set behaviour.

Per the publication, Dunham claimed in her book that the Marriage Story actor was “spectacularly rude to her” and that he even “hurled a chair at the wall next to her” and punched a hole into his trailer.

“At the time, I didn’t have the skill to… it never entered my mind to say, ‘I am your boss, you can’t speak to me this way.’ And, at that point in my 20s, I still thought that’s what great male geniuses do: eviscerate you. Which is weird, because I was raised by a male genius who would never do that,” Dunham told The Guardian.

Dunham went on to spotlight the “amazing men in [her] life” after recalling Driver’s alleged on-set behaviour, including Judd Apatow, who she said “is a great hero of mine”.

Tim Bevan at Working Title is a huge part of my life, and so is cinematographer Sam Levy. I just worked with Mark Ruffalo, the most thoughtful, sensitive, politically engaged, beautiful person,” she continued.

“There’s plenty of them walking around. But there were years when I thought: Can’t I just make things that only have women in them?”

The incident came up while the actress and author was appearing on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle.

“You write in the book about so much, but partly about a complicated relationship you had with your costar Adam Driver,” Jenna Bush Hager said while interviewing Dunham. “You were his boss. You were the director of this television series. Moments where there was violence or anger, moments where there could have been romantic feelings. How does it sit with you now?”

Dunham pointed out that she’d raised experiences in the book that would be “useful, potentially, to the reader”.

“I think I wrote about a dynamic that a lot of young women can understand in the workplace,” Dunham explained. “I spent eight and a half years writing this book, so I was super intentional with every word that I put on the page and then you come on live TV — with cool glamorous girls like you — and are asked to rehash it in a way.”

The actress continued, “I really want people to read it in context and understand it in the totality. It’s as much about my experience of coming to some kind of understanding of my own power as a boss than it is about anything else.”

Sheinelle Jones then asked a follow-up question about where Dunham stands with Driver today.

“When you were in that season [of life], did you ever think that you guys would still communicate again?” she asked. “Or that you would stay in touch?”

She then gave a broad response about the entire Girls cast.

“I, in the book, really share that there were a lot of magical moments and our entire cast has a sort of bond that I don’t think can ever be broken,” she said.

Driver worked alongside Dunham for all six seasons of Girls, where he played Hannah’s on-and-off again boyfriend, Adam Sackler.

At the time of writing, Driver has not responded to the claims made in Dunham’s interview or book.

Dunham’s Famesick is out now and has been described as a “frank, deeply personal reflection on illness, fame, sex, and everything in between”.
