Legendary Broughty Ferry lifeboat coxswain retires after nearly 800 rescues and 23 lives saved

A legendary Tayside lifeboat stalwart has retired after more than 30 years on the job.

Broughty Ferry Coxswain, Murray Brown, is hanging up his pager after nearly 800 rescues and 23 lives saved.

During his stellar career, the 57-year-old has also helped dogs, deer, dolphins and in one memorable rescue - a pig that had escaped an abattoir.

Murray has held numerous positions in his time.

He’s been ALB crew, ALB mechanic, ALB navigator, D Class crew D-Class helm, and Lifeboat training coordinator to name a few.

Murray became full-time coxswain in June 2007 after leaving a previous job at DC Thompson.

Within the role of coxswain, Murray gave sea safety talks to numerous groups including nursery children and primary and secondary pupils.

It is understood his favourite talk was to the local Woman’s Institute - but only because he got to judge the 'best cake' competition.

Murray was also well known for helping out other local lifeboat stations by covering coxswains and enabling them to get time off.

He has been on countless passages helping to move boats around the coast. Destinations include Shetland, Eyemouth, and Southern Ireland, and he was part of the crew that brought our current ALB 'Elizabeth of Glamis' to Broughty Ferry in 2001

A spokesperson for the RNLI outlined Murray’s astonishing career in numbers.

They told Dundee Live: “Within Murrays time as coxswain, he has launched 500 times on exercise and spent 1172.8 hours (465.5 days) at sea on exercise.

“He's launched 767 times on rescue missions spending 919.9 hours (38.3 days) on 'shouts'

“He has aided a few dogs, pigs, deer, and a dolphin, aided 246 people, and saved the lives of 23 people.”

And they added: “Although these figures are as coxswain, we know he has aided many, many more and helped save the lives of countless others.

"We all want to thank you for the helpful advice and wish you a happy and peaceful retirement.

“Enjoy the hills and the stay out of trouble!!! All the best.”
