Leeds United's 2021/22 campaign has failed to live up to the heights of their first season back in the top flight. A year beset by injury has bruised the team's pride and status as a force to be reckoned with once again in the Premier League. Leeds have rarely been able to field a full complement of first-team players in matchday squads and as a result have suffered.
With eight matches remaining, mathematical safety still feels a long way from being achieved. Contrastingly, last season Leeds had secured Premier League survival on March 19, 2021 following victory in the capital over Fulham. Currently, the team have accrued 29 points and are seven clear of the relegation zone, but with fixtures against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea still to come, nothing is guaranteed.
Despite survival appearing to be the sole objective, Leeds' next eight matches will prove to be some of the most consequential in the club's recent history. For the players, their futures will be deeply connected to the team's final league position - all except one, it seems.
