Leeds United transfer target Joel Piroe responds to Premier League links

Leeds United target Joel Piroe has dismissed any rumours linking him with a move away from the Liberty Stadium.

The Swansea City forward received formal interest from Leeds on transfer deadline day and had also been linked with fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Piroe scored 24 goals across all competitions last season after completing his switch from Eredivisie heavyweights PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch forward failed to score in any of his first five outings in the current campaign but has found the net in back-to-back games against Middlesbrough and Stoke City respectively.

No move materialised for the 23-year-old, who insists that he is ‘happy’ at the Liberty Stadium.

“I’m happy to be here,” Piroe told BBC Sport. “I’ve heard from things, that I wasn’t bothered, but I’m really happy to play here.

“They’ve [Swansea] have given me a lot of chances to show myself and I’m thankful for that. I just want to give my all and give my best to the team in all the ways I can.

“Of course it’s an honour to be seen by Premier League clubs but I’m really happy with my development here. As I said last season you don’t know what the future holds. I won’t say I was thinking of leaving, but I wanted to see my options and what’s best for myself.”

Leeds looked set to sign Marseille forward Bamba Dieng instead after agreeing a fee and personal terms. But the Senegalese forward snubbed the Whites’ proposal after receiving a late offer from Nice, only to fail his medical with the Eaglets.

They eventually secured a centre-forward at the death with the signing of Italian teenager Wilfried Gnonto from FC Zurich. The 18-year-old joined the Whites on a five-year contract after scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists in 74 appearances in Switzerland.

Gnonto is the youngest ever goal scorer for Italy after scoring his maiden goal against Germany in June.
