Leeds United transfer gossip as Whites face triple transfer test, Bielsa's Summerville claim

Here are the latest Leeds United transfer rumours on Tuesday, 8 February 2022.

Triple summer test

Leeds United will face a major battle this summer to keep Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Illan Meslier at the club.

That is according to the Athletic, who claim that the Whites are bracing themselves for major interest in all three during the next transfer window.

The trio are arguably Leeds’ most prized assets at the moment, with Phillips and Raphinha widely regarded as the club’s best two players, while Meslier is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world.

A number of Europe’s top clubs have already been linked with moves for Phillips and Raphinha, and it appears as though the Frenchman could be next.

Bielsa’s Summerville reveal

Marcelo Bielsa has revealed that Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville asked to leave the club in the January transfer window.

Summerville was linked with a move away from Elland Road last month, with Hamburg and AZ Alkmaar among the sides interested.

Reports claimed that the young Dutchman wanted to move elsewhere in order to obtain more regular game time, and his pre-Aston Villa press conference, Bielsa backed up those claims.

He said: "He spoke with me and he told me that he wanted to leave. I told him there wasn't any problem with him leaving.

"Any player who tells me they want to leave, I would answer 'no problem'.

"Simply not wanting to be here is sufficient. That's a sporting position. But the club has a different outlook because the player has a contract and there are obligations. I don't have the power to decide those things.

"When a player signs a contract he says he wants to belong. It's legitimate that he doesn't want to belong anymore. But I have a limit in the power of my decisions.

"All the players, if they want to leave I won't stand in their way. But I only have part of the decision."

Pundit’s surprise

Kevin Phillips is very surprised that Leeds United did not make any additions to their first-team squad last month.

The Whites were keen on signing RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson but once that deal hit an impasse, Leeds were happy to settle with what they’ve already got.

But given how many injuries Marcelo Bielsa has had to deal with this season, Phillips can’t believe the club decided against bringing anyone in.

He told Football Insider: “It’s bizarre. Only Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa can answer why they didn’t get anyone in.

“You think they’d want to freshen it up, especially seeing as this season hasn’t gone to plan. They have had so many injuries.

“A new signing can give everyone a lift. It can inspire people. Bielsa has shown he can be very stubborn or maybe it is because they don’t have the finances. Who knows.

“I’m surprised they didn’t dip into the market though. A couple of new faces would have been a big help for the run-in.”
