Leeds United striker teases comeback with series of social media posts

Leeds United have been without several key players throughout this season.

Due to a combination of positive COVID-19 tests, suspensions and in particular injuries, Leeds have scarcely been able to field a first-choice starting XI.

Last month, Leeds named teenage striker Sam Greenwood in the starting line-up for the Whites' FA Cup Third Round tie with West Ham United.

Ordinarily an U23s player, Greenwood moved to the top of Marcelo Bielsa's list of available strikers in early January.

Patrick Bamford's hamstring injury, sustained in the draw with Brentford a month earlier, ruled him out, while Joe Gelhardt and Tyler Roberts both picked up knocks in the home win over Burnley at Elland Road.

Rodrigo Moreno was also absent with a heel problem, meaning Greenwood was handed a first start for the club.

Unfortunately, the youngster only lasted 45 minutes, withdrawing with a reported knee injury which ultimately required surgery.

Greenwood does appear to be on the mend however, judging by his Instagram posts.

The England U21 centre-forward has shared numerous updates of his road to recovery on the social media platform, using Instagram's story function.

Shortly after successful surgery on his knee, Greenwood shared a short video of teammate Charlie Cresswell undergoing rehab for an injured shoulder.

His involvement alongside Cresswell did suggest he was also in the process or rehabbing.

Over the past week, Greenwood has twice shared images of his football boots, indicating he is back on the grass following his procedure.

While it is unlikely he will return to be a prominent first-team player before the end of the season, it will provide a considerable boost to the U23 side, who Greenwood routinely captains in Cresswell's absence.

On the injury front, Kalvin Phillips is expected back within the first few days of March, according to Marcelo Bielsa, while Liam Cooper has a similar recovery time-frame.

As yet, there is no update on Patrick Bamford's foot injury although last week Bielsa did admit he had not been able to jog, suggesting his recovery timeline may be a little longer than the aforementioned first-team duo.

Junior Firpo could be thrust back into the action this weekend after sustaining a hamstring injury which has kept him sidelined for a month.

This is due to the fact Stuart Dallas was substituted in the opening ten minutes of Leeds' 3-0 defeat to Everton, leaving the Whites with no senior left-back cover.
