Leeds United find themselves staring down the barrel of yet another Premier League relegation battle. The Whites are without a win in over two months and after dropping to their fourth consecutive defeat on Sunday, losing 3-2 to Fulham, the pressure is building at Elland Road.
Jesse Marsch’s side are in the bottom three and with the World Cup break less than three weeks away, they have their work cut out to climb away from trouble before their campaign comes to a halt. It’s a position Marsch knows Leeds shouldn’t be in and the stats would appear to tell the story of a team performing beneath themselves in the league table, too.
More specifically, the expected goals (xG), expected goals against (xGA) and expected points (xPTS) stats, which show Leeds are operating at a midtable level for the most part. While xG measures the quality of chances created by a team, xPTS can be used to provide a fair reflection of where a team should be in the league table and it’s fair to say Leeds are considerably underachieving at this point in the campaign in both.
