Football often fails to follow the script and at Leeds United the narrative contrived to deny Marcelo Bielsa of the culmination he deserved at Elland Road.
Chief executive Angus Kinnear has penned his first set of programme notes since the day Manchester United rocked up in West Yorkshire for their 4-2 win.
His column was conspicuous by its absence from the programme which accompanied what proved to be Bielsa’s final match in charge against Tottenham Hotspur last month.
While Kinnear acknowledges everyone at the club wanted to see Bielsa finish with a farewell which was befitting of his achievements, he said the best way to now honour the Argentine would be to remain united in seeing the club through this tricky spell.
“Everyone at the club wanted Marcelo’s reign to culminate in an Elland Road farewell that was befitting of his achievements, but sadly football often fails to follow the script,” said Kinnear.
“Whether supporters agree or disagree with the acceleration of the coaching transition, what cannot be questioned is the best way to honour and protect Marcelo’s legacy is to cherish and perpetuate the unity he inspired and build on the solid foundations he created.
“It is this that will give us every chance of fulfilling our collective ambition to make Leeds United great again.”
