Leeds United outline 11th-hour transfer position with deadline day rapidly approaching

Two days of the transfer window remain and Leeds United have offered their clearest message yet on which direction their business may go. Angus Kinnear has written to supporters and reiterated his belief United’s strikers are better than most of their rivals’ and the opportunity cost of a poor signing is massive.

Since the start of the window there has been a desire for a new forward in the squad. That reached fever pitch with the failed pursuit of Charles De Ketelaere.

Jesse Marsch has made no secret of the continued chase for a striker, but has, in recent weeks, underlined the difficulty in finding someone who ticks all of their boxes, on the field and off it. Kinnear has stressed the club will be ready to move if they need to at the 11th hour, but no desire to risk the long-term direction of the club with a bad investment.

“Whether there is any more activity remains to be seen and I know supporters are perplexed, after demonstrating we have the means and will to make one record-breaking offer for a striker, we have not secured a player in the position,” said Kinnear.

“The rationale is straightforward: we believe we have three striking options that are better than the majority of our peers (two proven international number nines and a player widely regarded as the best emerging young striking talent in the league) and will only supplement this with an exceptional addition rather than just a warm body.

“There is a huge opportunity cost to getting a major player investment wrong and despite the frustration among the fanbase, we will not compromise the longer-term trajectory of the club by making poor or high-risk investments.

“Nevertheless, the recruitment team and board will be working right up to the final hours of the window ensuring (as we have demonstrated in the past) if there is an opportunity, then Leeds United are best placed to judiciously capitalise on it.”
