Leeds United news: Daniel James performance praised as Wales secure World Cup place

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, 6 June 2022.

James praised

Leeds United winger Daniel James has been praised for his performance in Wales’ 1-0 win over Ukraine by Dave Edwards. Edwards was on commentary as Wales secured qualification for the World Cup in Qatar for the first time since 1958.

James played just over 70 minutes for Rob Page’s side and was able to cause the visitors problems with his pace. Speaking on Sky Sports, Edwards was impressed with what he saw from James and claimed that his end product was much ‘better’.

He said: “Dan James has done well again, I feel for Wales,” said Edwards. “He’s always been an outlet. And his end product has been better.”

James joins World Cup party

Dan James will almost certainly be heading to the World Cup later this year after the Leeds United star helped Wales to qualify for Qatar 2022 with a 1-0 win over Ukraine. The play-off win over Ukraine means Wales have ended their 64-year wait to make it to the World Cup, with James playing 70 minutes for the Dragons at a rain soaked Cardiff City Stadium before being replaced by Leeds' target Brennan Johnson of Nottingham Forest.

James now joins the likes of Raphinha, Kalvin Phillips, Brenden Aaronson, Mateusz Klich and Diego Llorente who have also helped their nations qualify for Qatar 2022. The Welsh winger could also be joined at the World Cup by Leeds team mate Tyler Roberts, who featured four times for Page's side in qualification.

What Minamino could offer

Leeds United look set for a summer of speculation around the signing of Takumi Minamino as Liverpool up their interest in Raphinha. The Reds are reportedly eyeing the Brazilian as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is looking increasingly likely to move to German champions Bayern Munich.

Jurgen Klopp is understood to be happy using Minamino as leverage in a player-plus-cash deal. The Whites have set their stall out, placing a £60-70 million price tag on their winger with no discussion of instalments, but a deal featuring a long-time target like Minamino could soften the club’s stance and provide an attractive option for all parties.
