Leeds United news as Wilfried Gnonto asking price emerges amid Europa League side competition

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Tuesday, 16 August.

Gnonto race

Leeds United are looking to beat Feyenoord in the race to sign FC Zurich attacker Wilfried Gnonto. That is according to Corriere dello Sport, who claim that Leeds have intensified efforts with the player’s agent in recent days in order to secure a deal.

Reports indicate that Zurich could be open to selling Gnonto for a fee in the region of €5 million, which is around half of what they were asking for in June. The 18-year-old is out of contract next summer and has already been capped four times by Italy’s senior side.

Llorente VAR claim

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his verdict on an incident involving Diego Llorente in Leeds United's 2-2 draw at Southampton. The Whites let a two goal lead slip in the clash at St Mary's.

Leeds went two goals ahead on the hour mark thanks to a brace from Rodrigo, before Southampton fought back with strikes from Joe Aribo and Kyle Walker-Peters. The incident involving VAR occurred in the 14th minute of the game, when Southampton's Stuart Armstrong raced through on goal after latching onto a through ball, before being challenged by Llorente.

Referee Tony Harrington waved play on, outraging the home supporters, with Armstrong left on the surface holding his leg. “I think two things," Gallagher said on Sky Sports News. "I think A: he gets the ball and B: Armstrong actually gets brought down by the ball because he stands on it.

Strikers Leeds could target

Jesse Marsch has repeatedly insisted that Leeds United are continuing to ‘evaluate’ the market for potential striker targets. The Whites pursued a move for Charles de Ketelaere strongly earlier in the window, but after losing out to AC Milan, it has gone relatively quiet.

Leeds’ need for a new striker was intensified over the weekend as familiar problems from last season re-emerged. Patrick Bamford limped off injured in the first half, but Joe Gelhardt was not on hand to replace him after picking up a dead leg in training that saw him miss out completely.

There are just over two weeks left for Leeds to bring in anymore new players on top of the eight that have arrived so far. Here is a look at four potentially realistic options they could look to target.
