Leeds United news as Southampton join Whites 'in race for' Gallardo with Shreuder 'not considered'

A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Monday, February 13.

Southampton to compete with Leeds United for manager Marcelo Gallardo with Alfred Shreuder 'not considered'

Football Insider claims Southampton have now joined Leeds United in the race to appoint Argentinian boss Marcelo Gallardo. The two Premier League clubs are both looking for new managers after parting company with Jesse Marsch and Nathan Jones last week.

The former River Plate boss is said to be in no rush to make a decision regarding is future, despite being out of work, but Leeds are keen on getting a manager in as soon as possible. The Whites have made approaches for Andoni Iraola, Arne Slot and Carlos Corberan, but are said to have been knocked back by all three.

Former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder was at Elland Road at the weekend, with his name the latest to be thrown into contention, but the Athletic's Phil Hay claims he's no longer in contention for the job. Gallardo is said to prefer starting a new project in the summer, which has thrown a spanner in the works for Leeds, according to the report.

Chris Sutton claims Leeds United ‘not as big’ as Celtic amid Ange Postecoglou links

Chris Sutton has questioned why Ange Postecoglou would consider leaving Celtic for Leeds United. Reports have linked the Greek-born coach with the vacant role at Elland Road following Jesse Marsch’s sacking.

While Alfred Schreuder is now the favourite for the vacancy, Postecoglou remains an outsider with the bookies who has enhanced his reputation north of the border. The 57-year-old was viewed as an underwhelming appointment in June 2021 as the Hoops had missed out on current Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.

However, regaining the title from Rangers and winning the Scottish League Cup in his debut season quickly dispelled the negativity. A nine-point lead at the top of the Premiership, as well as a 4-0 win over their bitter rivals earlier this season, has endeared Postecoglou to the Bhoys’ faithful further.

Leeds United supporters give Alfred Schreuder verdict as Whites search for new manager

Leeds United supporters have questioned the board's reported interest in bringing former Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder in as the club's new manager.

Schreuder was seen by LeedsLive at Elland Road for the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchman is the odds-on favourite to replace Jesse Marsch after the American was sacked more than a week ago.

Michael Skubala, alongside Chris Armas and Paco Gallardo, has led the team while the search for a new permanent head coach continues. Arne Slot and Adoni Iraola have both been linked with the top job at Leeds, yet Feyenoord and Rayo Vallecano were not willing to let either coach leave halfway through their respective seasons.

'Don't worry' - Rayo Vallecano chief makes Leeds United admission over Andoni Iraola links

Rayo Vallecano sporting director David Cobeno has admitted the club "knew" Andoni Iraola was not going to leave despite Leeds United's "interest" in their manager.

Iraola had been one of the early favourites to replace Jesse Marsch following the American's departure last week, but Vallecano's attempts to seemingly block their head coach from leaving midway through the season have poured cold water over recent speculation. Former Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder is now the odds-on favourite to take over at Elland Road, with the 50-year-old Dutchman even being seen in attendance after Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

A looming crunch match with Everton on Saturday - combined with Nathan Jones' dismissal as Southampton boss - has added extra urgency to Leeds' timeline in their hunt for a new manager. However, it now appears that Iraola will not be coming to the Premier League anytime soon.

Previously linked Arne Slot tells Alfred Schreuder why he should manage 'wonderful' Leeds United

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has told Alfred Schreuder that Leeds United "would be a wonderful club" for him to manage amid reports that he is set to replace Jesse Marsch at Elland Road.

The former Ajax man was seen by LeedsLive walking through the John Charles Stand after the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. It appears that the club are now looking to accelerate their search for a new head coach ahead of a crunch match with Everton on the weekend.

Southampton's decision to part ways with Nathan Jones could also see the Saints rival Leeds for potential candidates. However, it seems that the St Mary's club have their eyes on Marsch, with the American potentially set for a Premier League return following his dismissal as Whites manager just over a week ago.

'Deserved a point' - National media verdict on Leeds United 0-2 Manchester United

A round-up of what the national media are reporting after Leeds United’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Elland Road in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

'High on conflict low on quality'

Luke Edwards wrote in The Telegraph: "This was a game that had almost everything you would expect from a feisty, combative clash between two bitter old rivals in desperate need of points, at opposite ends of the table, but until Marcus Rashford’s thumping late header it was a high on conflict low on quality occasion.

"Leeds were physical and rough. They kicked, barged and scratched as they fought for everything. Every loose ball became a scrap. At times, especially in the first half, the ball felt like an appendage. It was there, but neither side looked after it properly given they were more intent on causing pain and discomfort. The game was trapped in a cycle of foul play."
