Leeds United news as Sam Greenwood shines on international stage with England U20s goal

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday, 30 March 2022.

Greenwood shines on international stage

Leeds United prodigy Sam Greenwood opened his account for England U20s last night, opening the scoring in a 3-1 win over Germany. He has not yet found regular first-team minutes at Elland Road but has established himself with the Three Lions at youth level and has previously linked up with the under-21s.

The U20s, who are led by former Leyton Orient boss Andy Edwards, were backed by a healthy crowd at the home of Colchester United and it was Greenwood who handed them the lead with an impressive finish after being teed up by Manchester City's James McAtee.

Just before the international break, Greenwood was thrust into the limelight at club level when he was called upon to replace the injured Patrick Bamford in the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Leeds-linked defender reportedly set for summer switch

Leeds United have previously been linked with Torino defender Ola Aina and may have an opportunity to swoop for him in the summer if they are interested. According to Calciomercato, the 25-year-old will be sold by Serie A side Torino in the summer, a claim which may put interested parties on alert.

He ascended the ranks of Chelsea's academy but failed to make a breakthrough in the first-team and spent time on loan at Hull City and Torino. His move to Italy was then made permanent but he did return to England last season for a loan move to Fulham.

Harte delivers damning James verdict

Former Leeds United defender Ian Harte has claimed current Whites winger Daniel James would not be plying his trade in the Premier League without his pace. The Wales international is known for his blistering speed and arrived at Elland Road for a reported fee of £25m last summer.

However, Harte has admitted he is 'not a massive fan' of the 24-year-old. Speaking exclusively to Freebets, he said: "Let’s be honest, if he didn’t have the pace, he wouldn’t play in the Premier League. He doesn’t have the knowledge or the know-how.

"It’s just head down and run. He’s got unbelievable pace, but like Adama Traore, he needs to learn to slow his legs down to get the cross in. "The majority of games I’ve seen, they end up going over and across the crossbar. Signing him from United for 25 million when they had him for four million – he’s done ok, he’s got raw pace but I’m not a massive fan."
