Leeds United news as Luis Sinisterra starting XI claim made after Crysencio Summerville stars at Liverpool

A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Wednesday, 2 October.

Sinisterra starting XI claim made after Summerville stars at Liverpool

Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes Luis Sinisterrra is going to struggle to get back into the Leeds United side after Crysencio Summerville's match-winning display at Liverpool. The Dutch youth international has been nurtured from the academy and was handed his debut last season.

The 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength since then, taking the number 10 shirt following Raphinha's Barcelona exit. His winner at Liverpool, alongside his performance, a real coming of age display.

“Summerville looks very good," Campbell told Football Insider. "I really liked the look of him. He is non-stop and he is a handful. We saw that against Liverpool.

“I think Sinisterra is going to struggle to get back in on the evidence of that. It would only be right if he struggles to get back in.

“If someone is doing the business, no matter what their age, leave them alone. Let them get on with it, that is what I say.”

Klich and Firpo positives despite Leeds United U21 frustration at Crewe

Michael Skubala was left to rue missed chances as Leeds United U21s were knocked out of the Papa John’s Trophy at Gresty Road. The Whites drew 0-0 with Crewe Alexandra in their final group stage game before losing the resulting penalty shootout 2-1 and that was only enough to secure a finish of third in Group B.

Leeds were able to name a strong side as they targetted progression to Round Two with Mateusz Klich captaining the side, while Junior Firpo, Joe Gelhardt and Wilfried Gnonto were also involved. However, they couldn’t help United break down the League Two outfit, who seemed content to make things difficult for their guests by sitting in a low block for the entirety of the game.

The Whites had their chances, with Darko Gyabi and Sonny Perkins going close, but they couldn’t find a way through Crewe keeper Dave Richards and ultimately paid the price.

Records broken, TOTWs and tipped for greatness - Meslier's match-winning Leeds United display

Illan Meslier's performance in Leeds United's 2-1 win at Liverpool on Saturday has certainly earned him a lot of plaudits. Meslier was handed Sky Sports' man of the match award after producing nine saves at Anfield, the most he has ever made in a single match during his time at Leeds.

That total was also the most of any goalkeeper in a Premier League game this season, highlighting the importance of his contribution in Leeds ' famous win. One-on-one saves has been a strength of Meslier's for a long time now and Saturday was no different as he denied Darwin Nunez on two separate occasions when the Uruguayan only had the 'keeper to beat.

Meslier has also been named in two different team of the weeks thanks to his performance, first making into the official Premier League one. Alan Shearer has chosen him in XI from the weekend, too - the only Leeds player to make it into the two sides.

Experts' view on Leeds United's relegation rivals as Whites sit just three points off the bottom

Leeds United currently find themselves among a crop of teams very much in an early battle to stave clear of relegation trouble. The Whites sit 15th in the Premier League, just a point above the bottom three, with the bottom half of the division looking extremely tight at present.

Leeds had entered last weekend in the relegation zone after a run of eight matches without a win, but an historic victory at Liverpool has certainly lifted the mood around the club. Aston Villa, Southampton, Leicester City, Wolves and Nottingham Forest are the five sides currently below Leeds in the table.

Given the tight nature of the division during the early stages of the campaign, LeedsLive asked reporters of each of the other sides in the bottom six for their assessment on the season so far, and how it could pan out. Please note, the majority of these responses came last week, ahead of the most recent round of matches.
