Leeds United news as Kalvin Phillips and Dan James' seasons end in international defeats

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday, June 15.

International defeats for Phillips and James

The 2021/22 campaign finally drew to a close last night with the conclusion of the summer Nations League fixtures. Two Leeds players were involved right to the last game of the season as Kalvin Phillips and Dan James played for England and Wales respectively.

For the Three Lions, it was their heaviest home defeat since 1928 as they were taken apart in a humiliating 4-0 loss to Hungary at Molineux. Meanwhile, despite losing, Wales far from disgraced themselves as the Netherlands had to rely on a 93rd-minute winner from Memphis Depay to beat Rob Page’s side 3-2.

As for the players themselves, it was a night to forget for Phillips who was nowhere near his best in his 23rd appearance for England. James, on the other hand, made a strong impression as he caused plenty of problems for the stellar opposition defence and played a key role in his side’s first goal of the game in Rotterdam.

Cresswell set for talks over Leeds future

Charlie Cresswell is another Whites player who has been impressing whilst on international duty over the last few weeks as he played in all four of England Under-21s’ European Championship qualifying matches. Because of the key role he has been able to play for Lee Carsley’s side, he will feel ready for more regular first-team involvement.

With a plethora of senior centre-backs ahead of the 19-year-old in the pecking order at Elland Road, a loan switch might be the best option given the fact he is unlikely to be a starting option at Leeds this season. He admitted whilst on international duty that he needs to speak to Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta as he is desperate to play more football.

Minamino update hints at potential Leeds interest

The theme of Marsch signing players he has formerly worked with could continue this summer as Leeds continue to be linked with Takumi Minamino. The Liverpool forward worked with the Whites boss briefly at Red Bull Salzburg before making a mid-season Premier League switch in the middle of the 2019/20 campaign.

Fabrizio Romano detailed yesterday that three clubs have opened talks with the Reds over a potential move for the Japan international. Given the prior links to Leeds, there was plenty of speculation from supporters that Marsch’s side, along with AS Monaco, were one of the interested parties.
