Leeds United news as Jesse Marsch told it was 'right decision' to loan Diego Llorente

A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Friday, February 3.

'Right decision' for Leeds United to loan Diego Llorente

Gabby Agbonlahor says it was the right call for Leeds United to loan Diego Llorente to AS Roma in January. The former Aston Villa striker pulled no punches in his verdict of the Whites defender, stating he wasn't good enough for the Premier League.

“I think it was the right decision – Llorente wasn’t good enough for the Premier League," Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “He’s sluggish, slow. He just doesn’t have the pace for the Premier League.

“You’ve got to trust the manager. He’s brought a number of players in that he personally knows, and he’s got to live and die by his sword.

“I think Leeds will be fine. They’ve got enough quality to stay up. Marsch has let Llorente go because he feels that it’s best for his team – and the fans have to trust him.”

Weston McKennie's 'outstanding' impression as Jesse Marsch's contemplates Leeds United debut

Jesse Marsch says Weston McKennie has been outstanding in training this week as he contemplates handing the Leeds United new boy a start against Nottingham Forest this weekend. The United States international has signed a loan deal at Elland Road until the end of the season.

The midfielder has a wealth of experience in both Germany and Italy and supporters could get their first glimpse of the 24-year-old this weekend. McKennie and Tyler Adams struck up an impressive partnership with the United States at the World Cup earlier this season.

The pair were instrumental as the US reached the last-16, only to be knocked out of the competition by the Netherlands.

Diogo Monteiro arrival leaves Leeds United with two clear objectives for the summer

Leeds United’s final January addition saw them bring in Diogo Monteiro from Swiss side Servette. The 18-year-old defender will go into Michael Skubala’s Under-21s set-up, with hopes high that he will replicate the impact of Wilfried Gnonto who joined from fellow Swiss Super League outfit FC Zurich.

Monteiro’s arrival was the fourth of a window that also saw Leeds acquire the services of Weston McKennie, Max Wober and Georginio Rutter. And in a welcome seal of approval for manager Jesse Marsch, it was a signing that had the backing of the Leeds faithful - just.

Asked to give their views on six potential January arrivals via LeedsLive’s Swerve or Swoop tool, 53% of respondents voted to swoop for Monteiro.

Rodrigo out and Weston McKennie call - pick your Leeds United team to face Nottingham Forest

Jesse Marsch's side are back in Premier League action this weekend when they head to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest. Both Leeds United and Forest have strengthened in January, with the Whites head coach boasting his squad is the best since he arrived at the club.

The arrivals of Georginio Rutter, Weston McKennie and Max Wober bolstered Marsch's squad in the recent window and all three could feature at the City Ground this weekend. The Whites boss will be hoping the trio add the quality needed to stave off relegation and push towards a mid-table finish.

A result at Steve Cooper's Forest would be the first step in the right direction, having not won in the Premier League since the 4-3 win over Bournemouth at Elland Road back in November. The winter break has somewhat prolonged Leeds' winless run, but pressure is still on Marsch to deliver results.

Jesse Marsch opens up on Rodrigo injury as he gives positive update on Leeds United quartet

Jesse Marsch has reiterated his disappointment in losing Rodrigo for six to eight weeks. The Spaniard has been Leeds United's standout performer this season, notching 12 goals in all competitions, but will miss at least the next two months after scans following their FA Cup tie with Accrington Stanley showed damage to his ligaments and bones around the joint.

Rodrigo will miss a number of important games as the Whites battle for Premier League survival, starting with Nottingham Forest this weekend. Adam Forshaw, Archie Gray and Stuart Dallas will all miss the trip to the City Ground but are well on with their recoveries.

Marsch said: "Obviously we made the announcement on Rodrigo yesterday, so unfortunately he picked up an injury at the end of the match that'll keep him out for probably six to eight weeks. Adam [Forshaw] we're building up but not quite ready yet."

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan lifts lid on ex-Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa's influence

West Bromwich Albion head coach Carlos Corberan has revealed that former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa "helps you become the best that you can be" after the former Whites coach detailed the influence that the Argentine had on him during their time together at Elland Road.

Corberan spent three years at Leeds, arriving as the club's U23 manager in 2017 before going on to take the top job at Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2020. After losing to Nottingham Forest in the play-off final last season, the 39-year-old resigned and went on to become head coach of Greek side Olympiacos.

A six-week spell in Europe came and went, with Corberan being appointed as West Brom's new manager in October last year. Taking over with the Baggies second from bottom in the Championship, they now sit just two points outside of the play-off places.
