Leeds United news as former defender details 'important' oversight for current issues

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Monday, 2 May.

Warnock questions recruitment

Former Leeds United defender Stephen Warnock has pinpointed the club’s lack of recruitment as the reason they could go down this season. The Whites sit just two points above the bottom three following a disastrous weekend of results, where both Everton and Burnley were victorious.

Leeds have signed just two players – Junior Firpo and Daniel James – in the last three transfer windows, and have struggled massively with injuries this season. Warnock thinks their failure to address the striker situation in January has proved to be a very costly mistake.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I just feel that they missed out on buying a striker in January, Leeds. And that was so, so important. Whether that was the club, or Bielsa’s stubbornness, that has cost them.”

Pundits on relegation

NBC Sports Robbie Earle and Tim Howard reckon Leeds United's short spell in the Premier League could be about to end, with both pundits tipping the Whites for relegation. The relegation battle was plunged into further chaos this weekend as both Burnley and Everton managed to pull of impressive wins while Leeds fell 4-0 to Manchester City at home on Saturday night.

The weekend results mean that Leeds sit two points ahead of 18th placed Everton, but have played one game more, meaning that once the Toffees have played the same amount of games, Jesse Marsch's side could be in the bottom three. Leeds only have four games left to secure their Premier League survival, with games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford left on the slate.

And the NBC pair believe Leeds could well be on their way to join Watford and Norwich in the Championship next season. Earle said: "The team with it all on could well be Leeds United. Could well be Leeds United. Arsenal and Chelsea are their next two games, it's hard to see them getting any points.

"They'll go into the Brighton game, Brighton will have possession but they don't score goals which gives you nerves and then the last game of the season is against a Brentford team that are playing with real freedom. It's a worry."

Positives

Leeds United find themselves in a difficult position after the weekend's results. A loss to Manchester City was not unexpected, though the injuries to Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper - with the former ruled out for a 'lengthy period' and the extent of the latter's not yet confirmed - compounded the misery of the result. However, it was the Burnley and Everton games which provided the bigger problems for Leeds.

Burnley were behind at Watford for the vast majority of the game, only to win 2-1 with two goals scored after the 80th minute. Meanwhile, Everton picked up a surprise win against Chelsea, as Richarlison capitalised on a Cesar Azpilcueta error and Jordan Pickford was on top form in the Everton goal.

All of that meant that survival is now out of Leeds' hands, but here are some positives that supporters can take. Click here to read.
