Leeds United news as defender sets World Cup target & Robles discusses Whites move

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

Koch sets World Cup target

Leeds United defender Robin Koch is targeting a place in Germany’s World Cup squad later this year. The tournament is set to get underway later this year and several players will be hoping they can play their way into the squads of their respective countries with some good early season form.

And Whites centre back Koch has made a positive start to making Hansi Flick’s squad having started the season as first choice at Leeds. Speaking to BILD, via Inside Futbol, Koch spoke of his focus on performing consistently for Leeds and hopes that can lay the foundations to being on the plane for Qatar.

He said: “I want to perform well at Leeds, that’s where my focus is. So I can recommend myself for the World Cup.

“I am still in regular contact with the coaching team. My goal is to be 100 per cent to every game in the Premier League and to be involved in the international matches in September.”

Robles’ first words

Former Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles believes Leeds United is the perfect place for him at this stage of his career. The 32-year-old was unveiled as a Whites player earlier this morning and will bring some much-needed competition for Illan Meslier, after Kiko Casilla's departure earlier this summer.

The former Toffees keeper has admitted he's looking forward to passing on his experience to his fellow Leeds shot stoppers after signing a one-year deal at Elland Road. Speaking to LUTV, Robles said: "Obviously, I'm really excited to be back four years later at this fantastic club. Thank you to Leeds for giving me this great opportunity to give back, because I think this is a special football club and I'm excited to come here.

"I think it's a fantastic club for growth. We have very good fans and a very good squad, I think it's good for me to keep growing. I think it's a perfect stadium - the typical English football Stadium - I think it's perfect to play football."

Kinnear on striker search

Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear has backed the likes of Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo and Joe Gelhardt to produce the goods, as the Whites' search for a new striker stutters.

Leeds missed out on number one target Charles De Ketelaere, who joined AC Milan, so the Whites are still looking for a new striker. However, while work is constantly ongoing in the hunt for a new forward, Kinnear says there are no 'obvious' choices in the market and that they'll only sign a player who they feel has a real chance of succeeding at Elland Road.

“It’s an ongoing process," he told The Square Ball Podcast. "It’s not like we sit down and go ‘we missed out on Charles, let’s go to the pub.' The process is continuing.”
