Leeds United news as BBC pundit slams 'nasty' Crysencio Summerville challenge in Cardiff City clash

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines on Monday, January 9.

BBC pundit slams 'nasty' Crysencio Summerville challenge in Cardiff City clash

Former Wales international and BBC Sport pundit Danny Gabbidon has slammed Cardiff City defender Tom Sang after his 'nasty' tackle on Leeds United youngster Crysencio Summerville during their FA Cup third-round clash yesterday.

The Bluebirds right-back hacked the Dutchman down early in the first half, leaving Summerville needing treatment for several minutes and made both players and staff worried if he could continue.

Fortunately, Summerville did manage to get up and played an hour before being subbed off for goalscorer Rodrigo, but Gabbidon thought he was fortunate to not be seriously injured as he spoke on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Summerville was away, Sang was caught on the wrong side. He gets a bit on the ball but he hacked through Summerville to get there.

"Those challenges can be quite dangerous. It was a nasty challenge."

Cardiff City goalscorer fires 'no fear' Leeds United warning ahead of FA Cup replay

Sheyi Ojo believes Cardiff City 'deserve' to already be in the FA Cup fourth round. The Bluebirds were just seconds away from a surprise upset when Sonny Perkins bagged his first Leeds United goal.

That 93rd-minute strike salvaged a draw, meaning the two sides will meet again at Elland Road in a fortnight. In truth, Leeds should have equalised earlier, as Rodrigo missed a penalty with 10 minutes to spare.

Mateo Joseph also spooned a golden opportunity from six yards out before Perkins finally bundled the ball over the line. Despite the late onslaught, Cardiff winger Ojo - who put his side 2-0 up in the first half - insisted Leeds should have lost.

Leeds United face Arsenal challenge as coach sees 'movement in the right direction'

Leeds United Women will travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round after overcoming Stoke City on Sunday afternoon. The Whites beat the Northern Premier Division side 3-1 in Tadcaster with a brace from Danielle Whitham proving to be decisive.

United actually fell behind in the contest, as Stoke’s Kelsey Richardson put the third tier side into the lead after just 45 seconds. Leeds, who hadn’t played in over a month, kept their cool and settled into their stride, though, with Whitham scoring twice.

Amy Woodruff grabbed a third for Leeds just after the hour mark to give them a commanding lead and set up an intriguing tie with Women’s Super League outfit Arsenal, who have won the FA Cup on no fewer than 14 occasions. The Gunners will, of course, be the favourites to progress but Leeds’ stars will be excited to test themselves against household names such as Lioness skipper Leah Williamson and her club and country teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy.
