Leeds United news as 49ers presence can impact Leeds board with contract call made

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Sunday 16 October.

Leeds backed for growth in the USA by Sky Sports football finance expert

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Leeds can piggyback on the 'fame' of co-owners the San Francisco 49ers to launch a commercial push in the United States.

The 49ers own a 44 per cent stake in the Yorkshire club and Maguire, who has appeared on Sky Sports amongst other platforms, told Football Insider that there could be opportunities for the club to grow it's brand on the American West Coast.

“Leeds are a big club,” Maguire said. "They no doubt see that there are opportunities in relation to the US market. The close relationship the club has with the 49ers means Leeds could attract additional interest on the West Coast of the US.

“Having some joint-badged products could lead to additional merchandise revenues. They can also use the fame of the 49ers to attract further interest in Leeds.

“They have attracted further interest from their promotion to the Premier League and from the documentaries that have been shown on streaming services.“

Jesse Marsch facing selection headache as Luis Sinisterra returns for Arsenal clash

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch is facing a selection headache in the attacking midfield with winger Luis Sinisterra returning from suspension having been sent off against Aston Villa a fortnight ago.

The American coach now has the Columbian as well as Jack Harrison, Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigo available for selection as the Whites host league leaders Arsenal at 2p.m.

In the defence, a decision will also have to be made at left-back with Junior Firpo returning from a knock. The position has been occupied by Pascal Struijk who is predominantly a centre-back.

Leeds defender calls for contract extension

Whites defender Pascal Struijk has admitted that it 'would be nice' for Leeds to extend his current contract which is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

The 23-year-old has deputised at left-back during the absence of Junior Firpo this season, appearing in all eight of their Premier League matches this season, and will now have to work extra hard to maintain his spot with Firpo back in training ahead of today's match against Arsenal.

On his future, the Dutchman said: "At least for now I’m really enjoying myself at Leeds and it would be nice if they were willing to extend my contract. I feel good here and I focus on Leeds."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta makes comparison between Jesse Marsch and Marcelo Bielsa

Ahead of this afternoon's meeting at Elland Road, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reserved praise for Leeds head coach Jesse Marsch and his side whilst also comparing the American to his predecessor Marcelo Bielsa.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Spaniard said: "With Jesse and the teams that they have already played, it is very clear what he wants to do - be a really intense team, a really dynamic team and a really good team when there are spaces to attack.

"There’s some similarities [to Bielsa’s team] but every coach has his own book, but what Jesse has done over the time he has been there is really impressive."
