Leeds United new manager runners and riders as Corberan, Pochettino, Gallardo, Knutsen cited

Leeds United are currently searching for Jesse Marsch's replacement after the American was sacked this afternoon following the 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest over the weekend.

The American had won just 25% of his matches in charge at Elland Road and leaves the club in 17th, level on points with Everton in 18th and only three points ahead of bottom-of-the-league Southampton.

But now, the club must find a new direction and will already have come up with a list of candidates to head up their new long-term project.

Here's all the information you need about the frontrunners for the vacancy at Elland Road...

Carlos Corberan - 6/4

The favourite to take the role, Carlos Corberan has most recently orchestrated a dramatic turnaround in the season of West Bromwich Albion. The Spaniard has taken them from relegation threats to sixth in the Championship, just four points behind Middlesbrough in third.

Since he took over the Baggies, he's managed to win 10 of his 13 league matches, with two of those losses coming against the top two teams in the Championship in Sheffield United and league leaders Burnley - the latter needing two late goals to snatch a win at Turf Moor.

He also has experience at Olympiacos, Huddersfield Town and previously worked under Marsch's predecessor Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds as an Under-23s coach and a first team coach before moving into management himself.

Marcelo Bielsa - 4/1

A name familiar to all Leeds fans, it's no surprise Marcelo Bielsa's name has come up as a possibility. After all, it would provide the club with some familiarity in a difficult time as they face relegation.

Bielsa has been without a job since he left Elland Road last February, but his return has been labelled 'unlikely' despite being a fan favourite during his time with the Whites.

He guided Leeds back to the Premier League during his four-year tenure in the Whites dugout, leaving fans with many happy memories.

Mauricio Pochettino - 6/1

Mauricio Pochettino will be remembered by most as the former Tottenham Hotspur manager from 2014 to 2019 and his spell at Southampton before that from 2013-2014.

After leaving Spurs, he took a two year break from management before returning to manage Paris Saint-Germain, where he played for two years in the early 2000's.

He won his first major trophy as a manager while at the Ligue 1 club, winning the Trophée des Champions in 2020, the Coupe de France in 2021, and managed his first Ligue 1 title last season upon which he parted ways with PSG.

Ralph Hasenhuttl - 6/1

After being sacked by bottom-of-the-league Southampton following a four-year spell with at St. Mary's, Ralph Hasenhuttl has been named as a potential candidate for the Leeds higher-ups to ponder on.

He managed the Saints in 173 matches, but had a 34.1 win percentage, the lowest of any of his previous clubs following a solid two year spell with Bundesliga outfit Red Bull Leipzig where he won 48% of his matches.

The Saints were his first appointment in England, on top of his time with RB Leipzig as well as and lower league German clubs Vgg Unterhaching, VfR Aalen and FC Ingolstadt 04 over a nine-year period before that.

Marcelo Gallardo - 10/1

Another manager currently out of a job, Marcelo Gallardo last managed River Plate in Argentina, a club he had three different spells at as a player.

Over his eight years there as a manager, he won 14 trophies including two Copa Libertadores, three Copa Argentina, one Argentine Primera División and one Copa Sudamericana.

The former Argentinian international has also won an Uruguayan Primera División in 2012 with Nacional, the only other team he's managed where he won 58% of his games in charge, and won back-to-back-to-back South American Coach of the Year awards from 2018 through to 2020.

Ange Postecoglou - 14/1

Current Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has also been named amongst the favourites for the Elland Road job after his side saw out a 4-1 win over St. Johnstone yesterday afternoon.

The 57-year-old spent over 20 years managing in Australia from 1996 to 2017, the country he grew up in, save for a season with Greek third-tier club Panachiaki in 2008.

Having managed Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and leading them to 2018 World Cup qualification, he resigned as Socceroos head coach to manage J-League side Yokohama F. Marinos where he spent the next three years.

Postecoglou then became the first Australian manager to coach a major club in Europe when he was appointed as Celtic boss in 2021. He's won 18 trophies in his managerial career and could bring glory back to Elland Road if appointed.

Kjetil Knutsen - 16/1

Kjetil Knutsen is certainly the least-known manager on this list but it's clear as to why he's been considered for the role. The Norwegian currently manages FK Bodø/Glimt in the Eliteseiren.

He became the first manager to ever have his side score six goals past a team managed by legendary coach Jose Mourinho when Bodø/Glimt won 6-1 against Roma in the Europa League last season.

He also managed Norwegian sides TIL Hovding, Fyllingen/Fyllingsdalen (after the merge between Fyllingen and Løv-Ham), and Åsane before his time in the Arctic Circle.

All odds are correct as of 17:30 on February 6 according to SkyBet.
