Leeds United 'most likely' destination for former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata

Fresh reports from Spain state that a summer move to Leeds United is the most likely scenario for Juan Mata.

According to Marca, plenty of clubs are interested in Mata - including some MLS sides - but Leeds are in the strongest position as they are his priority. The former Chelsea and Manchester United playmaker wishes to stay in Europe.

A report in July from AS said that Mata is happy to take a big pay cut to join Leeds. At Manchester United, the 34-year-old was understood to have been on £160,000 a week, which is significantly out of the Whites' financial reach. However, the midfielder's entourage are reportedly keen to make a move to Leeds happen, and he may have to settle for at least 50 percent less than what he was earning at the Red Devils if he is to sign.

Elsewhere, journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that no talks between Mata and Leeds are ongoing. He said: "There’s nothing agreed between Juan Mata and Leeds, despite rumours. He’s appreciated as a top professional and person but no talks ongoing as things stand.

"Also links to Real Oviedo are wide of the mark - Mata will make a decision on future soon."

Across spells at Chelsea and Manchester United, Mata has scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 277 Premier League appearances. The World Cup and Champions League winner was released by United in the summer after featuring seven times last term, and was an unused substitute in both of the fixtures against Leeds.

Mata has also won two FA Cups, two Europa Leagues and one European Championship.
