Leeds United headlines as Brenden Aaronson opens up on 'wonderful' Elland Road experience

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines for Sunday, August 7.

Aaronson on 'wonderful' Elland Road experience

Brenden Aaronson says winning his first competitive game as a Leeds United player was a 'wonderful experience'. The American was one of the star performers in a 2-1 win over Wolves, although he was cruelly denied the winning goal, which was recorded as a Rayan Ait-Nouri own-goal.

However, it was still an eye-catching Elland Road debut from the midfielder. “Winning at home, at Elland Road for my first time, what a wonderful experience for me and for the team to get the win today, it’s a great start to the season," Aaronson told Leeds United's website.

"You can tell how high the level is, everybody is so technical, Wolves were tough today. They moved the ball super well and they got it out to the other side which hurts us because we like to compress and keep it on one side so that was tough at one point. But we fought through it and we got the win and I think we were good on the counter attacks."

Kinnear says Marsch 'can't be judged' on last season

Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch can't be judged on last season, according to CEO Angus Kinnear. The American steered Leeds clear of relegation last season after taking over from Marcelo Bielsa in February.

Marsch won four of his 11 games in charge of the Whites last season, but Kinnear says the 48-year-old can't be judged off those matches, as he had to make 'pragmatic decisions'. “We can’t judge him on his football from last season," Kinnear told The Square Ball Podcast when asked if Marsch had to prove himself to the Leeds supporters.

Marsch 'really happy' with defender in Wolves win

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has claimed he was ‘really happy’ with the performance of Pascal Struijk against Wolves. Struijk was the man tasked with filling in for Junior Firpo as Leeds remain without the services of a recognised left back.

The 22-year-old is predominantly a central defender but produced an accomplished performance on Saturday, both defensively and in possession. His aerial ability and composure on the ball began the move for Leeds ’ winning goal, as Patrick Bamford’s cross was bundled into his own net by Rayan Ait-Nouri, despite Brenden Aaronson’s claim that it was his.

Marsch confirmed last month that Leeds were in the market for a new left back this summer, but with no movement on that front, Struijk was given the nod. Speaking after the game, Marsch opened up on the tactical discussions he and Struijk have had this week, while also praising his performance.
