Firepower has been added to Jesse Marsch’s coaching ranks in another shot in the arm for his position at Leeds United. Chris Armas, a retired USA international and former colleague of Marsch’s, fills the vacancy left by Mark Jackson and becomes assistant head coach alongside Rene Maric.
After two wins in 16 Premier League games, Marsch has been under pressure from the terraces, but Leeds have remained steadfast in their support for the American. After splashing the cash on Max Wober and Georginio Rutter, United’s move to hire his former assistant doubles down on their backing for Marsch.
Armas, 50, enjoyed a successful playing career in Major League Soccer, with LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, playing alongside Marsch at the latter. After his retirement from playing, Armas served as assistant to Marsch from 2015 to 2018 at New York Red Bulls, before becoming head coach after Marsch departed for RB Leipzig.

Armas spent two years in charge of Red Bulls, while he also had managerial experience with fellow MLS outfit Toronto FC. Last season, Armas spent time as an assistant at Manchester United, working under Ralf Rangnick.
He now links up with Marsch once again in West Yorkshire and is expected to be in the dugout for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at Accrington Stanley. Armas's arrival is subject to him obtaining a work permit.
