Things might not be going well on the field for Leeds Rhinos right now, but things are going just swimmingly off it for their forward Alex Mellor. The back-rower proposed to his long-term partner, Abbie Sherlock, on Saturday night, and she agreed.
27-year-old Mellor has spent five years with Sherlock and got down on one knee at popular Leeds restaurant Blackhouse - The Grill on the Square, this Saturday. He confirmed the news on social media on Sunday morning with pictures and a video of the moment.
Posting on Instagram, he said: "I’m still not sure if she actually managed to say the word ‘yes’ due to pure shock but it’s looking like I have a wife to be."
Messages of congratulations from across the rugby league community soon flooded in. Rhinos teammates Kruise Leeming and Jack Walker were among the first to send their well wishes while former Leeds players Adam Cuthbertson, Konrad Hurrell and King Vuniyayawa also commented on social media.
Mellor, who joined the club from Huddersfield ahead of the 2020 season, is in the final year of his contract with the club. He has scored four tries in 32 appearances for the club.
